Welcome To The DMOZ Blog
Hello and welcome to the new DMOZ blog, the official source for information, insight, and updates about DMOZ, the Open Directory Project ( ODP ).
DMOZ is made up of thousands of passionate, volunteer category enthusiasts and experts from all over the world who donate their time to arrange their respective portion of the web. Thanks to their work, DMOZ is a starting place for browsing and searching the web. DMOZ data is also used by thousands of search engines and web portals to help people quickly and easily find information on the web.
To paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors of DMOZ's death have been greatly exaggerated.
The editor community is very much alive and thriving. Thousands of new sites are added and updated every week, and we continue to receive hundreds of editor applications and suggested sites every day.
We thought now was the right time to open the door and start a conversation with the Web community about what's happening with the largest human-edited directory.
We intend to use this blog to:
- Provide authentic messages about DMOZ and the efforts of our volunteer community.
- Highlight enhancements, both current and future.
- Allow editors to showcase their categories and describe, in their own words, why DMOZ is so important.
- Recruit new editors. If you have access to the Web and are passionate about a category, find out how to apply.
Additionally we want to hear from you.
What do you think about DMOZ? Why do you use the directory or data? Is there something you would like to see fixed? When you've been around as long as we have, some people are bound to have great things to say, while others might have a few choice words based on their personal experience. Either way, we want to hear it :)
We plan on posting every week so grab the RSS feed or sign up for an e-mail alert to receive notification of new entries as they are posted.

83. I am in favor of Dmoz editors getting paid so that the long delay in editing websites would be shortened and they would do a good job. This volunteer editing work is not working and could sink Dmoz.

84. I guess I'm kind of bitter because I've tried for about 5 years now (Maybe once or twice a year) to submit our site (While all of our competitors are listed) and I get nothing back. No response, no status, no sorry kid get lost. I even tried sending feedback and never any replies.
Theres no imagination necessary to know why people (ass)ume corruption (see self appointed editors acting out of self-interest) or thinking of DMOZ in terms of SEO sespool.
In this day and age is it too difficult to provide the submitter with some automated clue as to the status of their requests?

85. I really feel for anyone serving over there and their families. I am an Army wife. My husband has served in the Army for 8+ years and is on his second Middle East deployment. He is currently in pretrial confinement in Kuwait and is accused of murdering an Iraqi/Al Qaeda insurgent. His deployment was difficult enough for our children and me before this happened. My thoughts go out to everyone affected by this war. My husband’s case is further described at: http://www.freewebs.com/leonardotrevinolegalfund

86. I think this is a great tool and I would love to submit a site, but I can't get beyond the submission agreement. I get a message telling me to verify the text in the image box. After doing it 8 times(carefully)I figured I'd stop and ask for help. (I'm a quick study).
I am assuming the server might be jammed due to popularity or there is just to large of a back-log. I did see in your blog post that anyone who is passionate about a catagory can apply to be an editor. Can someone whose interest it is to submit sites BE an editor? Is that considered a conflict of interest? Hmmm.

89. I started my website in 1999 and was in the credit category.
Somewhere, I was removed and the reason I got was my content was no different from other sites. What they didn't even look at was that I was the originator and creator of the content, and people copied me ! Look back on Alexa, and you will see that yes, http://www.mycreditcheck.com/ was one of the first sites of its kind. Also a reason given, was affiliate linking. I honestly think this is a unfair reason to rid someone. I have a site that is 98% great, original content, can I not have one or two pages dedicated to selling something ? Do I not have a right to try and earn income from the site ?
Not to mention that the editor must have had his own site, that was no different from mine in any way and was allowed to keep his/her site in that category. When you have blatent abuse or unfairness like this, it is ridiculous. I even reported it, but nothing happened.
Look at who had their sites first before you acuse people of duplicate content. When you consider that I have answered thousands of emails from people over the last 8 years, with credit questions/problems in a genuine effort to help people, I don't think a couple pages selling products is unreasonable.
How can I get back in ?
Thanks,
Mary Clark

90. Ok, its been more then a month that this 'blog' has been alive. How about an update from DMOZ on the status of things? Here are my thoughts of DMOZ. It is a broken business model and let me tell you why, corruption and abuse are rampant and almost impossible to stop. Thats great that you are getting rid of 'bad' editors who have ulterior motives, but guess what, 95% of the new editors you just brought on will do the same thing, and thats look out for their own sites. Good luck cleaning up this mess.
Another question i have is why do you allow posts regarding 'the war in iraq' and others that are just links to sites, but you sensor/delete my posts that are critical of DMOZ? At least my posts are 'on topic' for this blog? This blog is turning into as big a joke as DMOZ is...

91. I am attempting to submit my site for review but somehow I cannot get past the graphic. I enter the correct graphic but it instructs me to go back and check my image against the graphic. I can not get beyond this spot. I need some help here. I have tried this about ten times. There must be a thank your for your submission after you enter the graphic but I am not seeing this. I hopwe that my site has not been submitted ten times.

100. @Charlie
I agree 100%, they allow posts that are nothing more than a link to onlineprofit-website.com or chinese-toilet-seat.com, but intelligent thoughtfully written posts that criticize dmoz in any way are removed.
However, they let the stupid criticisms stay...
This blog is an excellent representation of what is in the directory and how it is run. Good job DMOZ.
