As the numerous responses to my first post show, this is one of the most common and controversial questions asked about DMOZ.
To answer this question, it is important to consider what DMOZ isn't.
DMOZ is not set up as a listing service for site owners. Site submissions are only one source for finding quality sites to add to the directory. Some editors choose to review submissions while other editors might prefer to (at first) find sites on their own through search engines, as links from related sites, in newspapers, on television, on highway billboards, etc. So...there are no guarantees that once you submit your site it will be reviewed within a specific amount of time.
There are also a number of practical reasons it can take a while for a site to get listed in DMOZ:
The site is submitted to an incorrect category. Many sites are submitted to categories that are either too broad, too narrow, or unrelated to the content of the site being submitted. Most of the time, incorrectly submitted sites are sent to the appropriate category for review, but that will usually increase the amount of time that a site will ultimately wait for review. Submitting your site to the single most specific category relative to your site's content will significantly improve your chances of getting your site reviewed.
The site is submitted to the wrong language section of the directory. For example, non-English sites are frequently submitted to the English-language section of the directory. As with sites submitted to the wrong category, editors have to redirect these sites to the correct language, which can increase the amount of time that they will await review.
The submitted site does not meet submission or editorial guidelines for inclusion. Quite often people submit sites that are incomplete, don't contain enough content, or consist primarily of syndicated or mirrored content. Uniqueness of content is one of the most important factors editors consider when reviewing a site for inclusion.
The category has a backlog of submissions. This can result when the popularity of the topic, which may attract large numbers of both listable and unlistable sites, doesn't match the interests of active or prospective editors. Submitting to one of these categories may mean a longer wait. (That doesn't mean you should submit your site to the wrong category just because you think it doesn't have a backlog – deliberately submitting your site to the wrong category is never a good choice.)
URBAN LEGENDS ( i.e. popular & fictional reasons ) as to why a site does not gain acceptance into
The category editor is corrupt and/or a competitor is keeping the site from being listed. DMOZ regularly receives allegations of corruption and abuse through its public abuse reporting system. Each report is thoroughly investigated and crosschecked. Most of these claims turn out to be baseless. In the rare case where there may be some truth to the allegation, the matter is dealt with immediately.
No one is monitoring the category. While a few categories in DMOZ may not have a listed editor that doesn't mean there's no one minding the store. All editors listed higher in a category's hierarchy can and do edit subcategories. In addition, many editors have permissions to edit anywhere in the directory.
I'm certain there will be no shortage of comments to this post, but please consider the topics listed above and re-check your submission application again.
And if/when you do submit, please...please....please avoid any claims/jokes/sarcasm of offering money to get accepted into DMOZ. Editors apply zero sense of humor to these types of statements and it is a sure fire way to ensure your site does not gain entry. Ever.
One of my future posts will include best practice recommendations for suggesting sites to editors.
Cheers.

81. I have to agree with several of the entries stating it would be quite helpful for website owners to be able to check the status of thier submition. Even if the the reality of the matter is our site is still just sitting there waiting to be looked at (status message site in que waiting for review). At least then we would know you have it. Is there anything someone can do to at least make sure their submition has gone through?

82. I wonder if DMOZ has considered accepting "review fees." I'm just brainstorming here, but I would accept the idea of a fee --say $50 to $100 -- just to be guaranteed that the site would be reviewed within, let's say, 7 days. There would be no other strings attached, and the money would go to DMOZ, not the reviewer directly, to avoid any conflict of interest.
I'm involved with two websites, one as the VP of Marketing for a major online university, and the other a family affair. I've read some very negative comments about DMOZ and they all seem like they could be diminished if DMOZ had more money available through user fees.
Your thoughts?

83.
I've tried to submit my site but after submitting I don't get
acknowledgment that it was received- instead I get a page that says
make sure I have entered the security code correctly. Is this is
error? Does this mean my site was not submitted? I used the back
button (as it asks you to do) and entered the security code exactly
as it appeared. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

84. I finally figured out how to get my site listed on DMOZ - http://www.thebutcherblocktop.com- It would seem that this is the only way it will ever be listed in the Directory. lol

86. I have to agree that submitting a site, waiting for months, then be told you MIGHT BE spamming the directory by resubmitting your site is very unfair. There should be at least a status response and an allowance for continued submissions without penalty if a certain time limit between submissions is observed.
I've been trying to get into the DMOZ for four years, submitting every 3 to 6 months. I seriously wonder if anyone is at home?

87. Bob Keating admitted that DMOZ is biased.

An "open" directory with an "unbiased" editor would not permit his/her evaluation of a web site to be colored by their opinion of the one person suggesting the url. After all, the obligation of the editors is to the internet community at large, not to exact revenge on someone based on an improper comment. To deny entry to an otherwise valuable resource because the editor did not like someone's comment is not in the spirit of openness and demonstrates a definite bias.

89. Well speaking of facts this is the best ODP i ve ever seen but as a matter of fact when any one submits his/her recommended sites from the SUGGEST URL link provided there is no further notification about whether the site has been listed or not and moreover there are no reasons given why the site/URL provided was not listed. Maybe DMOZ should work on this to hit this out!!

90. I too am at a loss, I have tried to add my site http://www.dees-fancydress.co.uk to DMOZ. The lack of feeback as to if it is in a queue or not is very frustrating. Looking at the last edited date on the category shows it hasnt been updated at all in the past few months, so was by site not excepted or is no one editing the catagory.

92. I submitted two sites (http://www.educationstationteachers.com and http://www.xanga.com/dextr) about a year ago. Since I had just recently learned the term "SEO" from my daughter's boyfriend over dinner, it is entirely possible that I did it wrong. However, the instructions clearly tell us not to submit again. There doesn't seem to be any way to check on whether a site is awaiting review or hasn't been properly submitted. I'm adding my comment to those above who are mentioning how helpful it would be to be able to see whether we are still in the queue or not.

98. I have tried to list my site a few times over the last year or so, but to no aval.. and i really don't understand why? its in the correct cat, the correct language and there is plenty of content on my site, so we hit all the tick boxes in your guidelines. In-fact there are many of my competitors sites listed, with very similar content. Our site also ranks quite good on alexa (almost in the top 50k). But still its not listed? The main reason i ask is because some data on alexa (which i'd like displayed) is taken from DMOZ. If someone at DMOZ could spare 2 mins to have a look at this for me, that would be fantastic and i'd really appreciate it. Let me know if you need my website address, as i don't want to put it here and look like i'm spamming your blog.
Thanks

99. What is a quality website? near dmoz editors I can't understand, my website has unique contents and there is also a lot of space available in relevant category but despite of my submission dmoz editors could not find website. Remember its appears at first page on all major search engines.

100. I have been trying to get my site submitted since January. I've tried three times and I've double checked to make sure that I have the correct info required and even compared it to entries already existing in the directory. How can you find out what categories will be slower for the editors due to a shortage of interest? I check the ODP everyday to see if my site is listed but the constant disappointment is starting to wear on any positive hopefulness towards being added to your list.
