As the numerous responses to my first post show, this is one of the most common and controversial questions asked about DMOZ.
To answer this question, it is important to consider what DMOZ isn't.
DMOZ is not set up as a listing service for site owners. Site submissions are only one source for finding quality sites to add to the directory. Some editors choose to review submissions while other editors might prefer to (at first) find sites on their own through search engines, as links from related sites, in newspapers, on television, on highway billboards, etc. So...there are no guarantees that once you submit your site it will be reviewed within a specific amount of time.
There are also a number of practical reasons it can take a while for a site to get listed in DMOZ:
The site is submitted to an incorrect category. Many sites are submitted to categories that are either too broad, too narrow, or unrelated to the content of the site being submitted. Most of the time, incorrectly submitted sites are sent to the appropriate category for review, but that will usually increase the amount of time that a site will ultimately wait for review. Submitting your site to the single most specific category relative to your site's content will significantly improve your chances of getting your site reviewed.
The site is submitted to the wrong language section of the directory. For example, non-English sites are frequently submitted to the English-language section of the directory. As with sites submitted to the wrong category, editors have to redirect these sites to the correct language, which can increase the amount of time that they will await review.
The submitted site does not meet submission or editorial guidelines for inclusion. Quite often people submit sites that are incomplete, don't contain enough content, or consist primarily of syndicated or mirrored content. Uniqueness of content is one of the most important factors editors consider when reviewing a site for inclusion.
The category has a backlog of submissions. This can result when the popularity of the topic, which may attract large numbers of both listable and unlistable sites, doesn't match the interests of active or prospective editors. Submitting to one of these categories may mean a longer wait. (That doesn't mean you should submit your site to the wrong category just because you think it doesn't have a backlog – deliberately submitting your site to the wrong category is never a good choice.)
URBAN LEGENDS ( i.e. popular & fictional reasons ) as to why a site does not gain acceptance into
The category editor is corrupt and/or a competitor is keeping the site from being listed. DMOZ regularly receives allegations of corruption and abuse through its public abuse reporting system. Each report is thoroughly investigated and crosschecked. Most of these claims turn out to be baseless. In the rare case where there may be some truth to the allegation, the matter is dealt with immediately.
No one is monitoring the category. While a few categories in DMOZ may not have a listed editor that doesn't mean there's no one minding the store. All editors listed higher in a category's hierarchy can and do edit subcategories. In addition, many editors have permissions to edit anywhere in the directory.
I'm certain there will be no shortage of comments to this post, but please consider the topics listed above and re-check your submission application again.
And if/when you do submit, please...please....please avoid any claims/jokes/sarcasm of offering money to get accepted into DMOZ. Editors apply zero sense of humor to these types of statements and it is a sure fire way to ensure your site does not gain entry. Ever.
One of my future posts will include best practice recommendations for suggesting sites to editors.
Cheers.

101. I have tried to get my site listed on dmoz for about 18 months. I have no clue as to why the site isn't coming up - I have even tried to make a listing which related to shopping, rather than going straight or cake decorating.
Am I correct in now beleiving that no-one has edited this category in 18Months????

102. Do you have a policy of alerting site submitters, via email if their site was turned down or wrongly categorized.
Thank You

103. The main issue in my opinion, after reading this article and the comments, remains unanswered, how do I know if my site is in the queue or if it has been rejected? If it has been rejected how would I know what is wrong so I can improve?
I know for a fact my website has more content than all of the sites in the category I've submitted it to. Some of these websites are not even topic-related, mine surely is. After reading your frequently asked queries (or questions), I believe my website is answering all of the requirements.
But again there's no way to know that for sure, no way to know the website's status.. Is anyone going to tell the people who are at the same position as me what to do/improve? Or is waiting a few months and re-submitting is what DMOZ wants us to do?

104. I have 5 different sites in 5 different categories that I submitted to be listed and NONE gets listed after 6 months!
Then I submitted a site for a local college and that gets listed in 2 weeks!
Bob are you telling us that there are no corrupt editors? That there are backlogs for all 6 categories that don’t get listed and a college site gets listed in 2 weeks?
I don’t want to sound negative but the reason people (especially webmasters) bang on about DMOZ is because it gives them serious SEO value. To be honest, your average surfer looking for a product does not come to DMOZ to find a listing, they search through search engines.
If DMOZ is so keen on making it a resourceful directory it should exclude all commercial sites and let them compete in the market with others. At least there will be a fair competition.

105. I have submitted few site to few directories which I believe that where the sites belong. They are authentic sites and I have not heard anything from DMOZ.
Is there a way to contact DMOZ editor for some guidance.
Thank you

108. I am trying to get listed in DMOZ, and I will keep trying, I just don't want to get banned for being persistent. I think the directory does a good job and I have been at other directories trying to get my new sites off the ground, that have thousands of pending applications. so waiting and being patient is pretty normal. I have seen the bids on getafreelance.com that say they can get you a DMOZ listing, but who knows maybe it is someone from DMOZ just looking for those who would try such tactics.

109. Dmoz is still Dmoz.
They actually review manually and add quality websites.
Just be patient and wait up to 3 months.

110. I've tried several times over the last 3 years to get my ligit site listed here. My site has climbed very well in google and the other ligit search engines. I too now believe that one of two things are occurring at DMOZ, #1 not enough editors (I applied to be an editor for my catagory, but was told too many editors already, hum) or #2, the editors of internet radio listings must be a competitor, lazy or on the take. Being as my listing shows up within the the first pages on most "reliable" search engines, I will now give up on DMOZ. Don't get me wrong, I am probably the biggest fan in the world when it comes to open source. Sorry to see that the meaning behind that is lost here. I think it is time to start testing your editors and see what is what.

111. One other thing, I applied again to be an editor, this time I was told to wait until an editor from that category reviewed my app. I was denied, so now I do not expect to ever be included. Maybe the editor who denied my app to be an editor is the editor that will not include my site(either a competitor or someone who shouldn't be an editor). Now more than ever, I believe that DMOZ is nothing more than a farce. Thanks for nothing guys. I am going to focus my attention else where, I am sure it will be more productive. To Mr. Keating, you should have someone submit legit sites that you know should be included to your editors as a test and see if they really should be editors on this site.

112. "I think it is not worth to waste any more energy trying to get listed in DMOZ. Like me, many other site webmasters are equally disappointed, and no longer trying to get listed. With time this will cause DMOZ to simply vanish from webmasters forums and discussion and its consequence will be simply bye bye DMOZ."

114. I can't submit my website in dmoz. What is the reason I don't know. Can any body knows what is the reason ?

115. I had submitted the following website under Tamil. Why is the site not being accepted. It is only Electronics Datasheet website in Tamil and should be placed under Tamil -> Science -> Electronics or whatsoever.
It takes great amount of effort to put forth a website, but new site listings are not accepted this way, DMOZ would remain stagnant.

118. Dear friend,
I have submitted my site for inclusion several times over the last several years to no avail. I have never received a response and I do not understand the reason I am not being included. I am a legitimate data processing company in business since 1992 and the webpage dates to 1999. I have carefully reviewed the guidelines and do not see any reason I am being excluded. Can you help me understand what I must do. Thank you in advance.

119. I still think DMOZ is the absolute best human edited directory out there. No my site hasnt been listed yet but even after a year i still remain hopeful!
I understand people get frustarted and there may not be enough editiors but its about patience people and quality! Thats what DMOZ is. My site is supposed to be listed here:
Top: Regional: North America: United States: California: Localities: S: San Jose: Health: Alternative: Chiropractic (8)
My Title is: Health Group Online
This is the description I used:
Dr. Don Ajlouni San Jose Chiropractor specializes in treating patients with painful headaches, neck pain and lower back pain fast.
Can anyone tell me if this falls within the guidlines. Maybe Im doing something wrong. And if im not maybe an editor can list me. I would be soooo happy!
