"DMOZ Is Like Gold"
Isn't that awesome!
We would like to thank to the good folks over at ISEDB.com for the love they sent our way in their post on 'How To Optimize For Google.' A piece that takes a holistic look at optimizing for search engines and today's this portion spoke to all the types of webmaster tools-including directories that are available.
Not that I'm biased, but I think we can all agree that the most exciting take away is that search engineslove place a different value on free, human edited directories. The point is easily debatable. Perhaps a link in DMOZ is as valuable as any other link on the web or maybe it is worth more. Purely sharing the comment and curious what you all think.

Quotes below ( underline added by me -strikethrough to show "what not to do" )
Getting a site into DMOZ is like Gold.
Google loves links from DMOZ and your site will reap the benefits.
The big catch however is actually getting your site into the directory in the first place. Find the perfect category for your siteand check to see if it has an editor. If you see a link "Volunteer to edit this category" try and find another relevant location. Pages without active editors take much longer to get listed into. Once you find the perfect directory submit your site every 4-6 months until listed. If you are lucky you will get in eventually.
UPDATE...the one part where this article is off ( and not helpful in getting your site into DMOZ ) is in the multiple submissions...this actually won't help your chances at all.
Also, there is a great post from Bob Keating to check into on 'Why Hasn't My Site Been Accepted Into DMOZ" specifically including this passage here:
No one is monitoring the category. While a few categories in DMOZ may not have a listed editor that doesn't mean there's no one minding the store. All editors listed higher in a category's hierarchy can and do edit subcategories. In addition, many editors have permissions to edit anywhere in the directory.

21. Well this is true...
4 submissions in 3 years and no listing at all.

22. Greek sites are left for years around -3500 in all subcategories...
thought that there is no people to manage greek sites
what else it can be????
yesterday i decided to become an editor not for me but for this "human" directory....
I applied for a sub-subcategory that had 4 other subcategories and only 120 sites total in all this 5 subcategories
i got an answer early this morning said that reject my claim
because they are FULL of editors in this category or it is a large category and I must reapply again for a smaller category....
Well i did so i ask for a totally bottom subcategory with 2 only sites in it ... let's see their answer
YG.these categories i mentioned above had left as is for at least one year with out any modification ...
i wonder where is this great team of editors ... this FULL of people team???

23. Just wondering, why all the negative comments don't make it, are you afraid of people knowing the truth, don't worry, many already know about your corruption nest. As for the editors, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

24. THIS IS OFF-TOPIC (sorry)
I want to let DMOZ know of a technical error on the website but can find no way of contacting them except here. Here's the problem: the 'Suggest URL' link from http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Ireland/Society_and_Culture/Genealogy/ is broken, giving the following error:
"Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /cgi-bin/add.cgi.
Reason: Error reading from remote server"
Apologies for using this inappropriate means of contact, but I can find no other.
Sincerely

26. DMOZ,
Thanks for chiming in on the article to clarify any inaccuracies reported. I have carefully chosen the category for my site and submitted it, and have sometimes wondered if there was an editor in the category that my site is in.
I continue to look for my listing, and appreciate your clarification of the article.
Thanks

27. "While a few categories in DMOZ may not have a listed editor that doesn't mean there's no one minding the store"
should read:
"While a few categories in DMOZ may have a listed editor that doesn't mean there's someone minding the store."
The biggest complaint to DMOZ ist that complacent (wilfully or not) editors do not handle their in-boxes.
Perhaps there should be a "REPORT EDITOR" button on every page which would trigger an editor review.
just one example is tanja76 on

No new entries for ...?

28. Peter:
The truth is really different. We should all be thankful to Dmoz. Not because, They are free, But they spend hours and hours, and so on, just recieving our queries, having a look at that, going through etc. Its great to be listed in the directory, It itself is an honor, But wait, Choosing all the right categories, never meant, You have studied all the rules and regulations and the guide-lines.
While most of the people are submitting in the Dmoz, They place their keywords in the descriptions, sometimes, they write lots of data, sometime they write the things are not allowed, etc. This all creates a big mess in the results.
However, If you are looking to be listed in Dmoz, Try your luck once every four months, being more specific about your products, services etc you are offering, by choosing the right categories. You might get there.
Anyway...I am not listed there as well. But I am just glad, because I might get there sometime.. I have no sorrows, I did not paid. Better luck next time?

29. There is a saying "what you do, you are doing it for yourself". If someone is just submitting things not appropriate for dmoz, or not submitting it to right places that makes it the long wait time to get submitted

30. Dmoz is really a gold mine if your link is submitted in it.
it is too hard to submit it but not impossible.

31. At least you have been listed. I run one of the best little musical instrument stores in Southern California called 2kool4skool. We have over 100,000 satisfied customers. We have been selling musical instruments online since 2002. We are ranked number 8 in Google for "musical instrument store". But we have been waiting over a year to be added to the DMOZ musical instrument store category. The submission was, in my opinion, correct. What does it take? I hear of people being added within 2 weeks while others like me wait forever.

33. I get the following error attempting to submit a URL to Business/Marketing_and_Advertising/Salesmanship/Education_and_Training which has never been listed since 2005 when I first attempted to submit the site and am still not having any luck:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /cgi-bin/add.cgi.

34. I have made many submissions and frankly very few get submitted, I have also attempted to become a Volunteer with no response AT ALL. I personally wouldn't submit to a category which doesn't have an editor because it takes many many months longer to get included.
