Have Questions About DMOZ? Let us know!
Hi Everyone,
One of the things we want to accomplish with this blog is to improve transparency and open the lines of communications to all of the groups who care about and support DMOZ.
With that in mind, we asked editors to submit questions to us and then posted a selection of questions (with our responses) in our Ask AOL post last October. Now we'd like to provide similar opportunities to both the webmaster community and to the general public. What do you want from the ODP as a user? As a webmaster? What would make the directory easier to use? A resource that better suits your needs? Easier to navigate? What are we currently doing well that you'd like to see us do more of in the future?
While we can't address every question that we receive, your input gives us valuable insights on what our stakeholders view as interesting, frustrating, valuable, etc. We'll pick a sample of questions from each group and answer these on the blog in a couple of weeks.
Do you have something you'd like to ask? If you are a webmaster, you can email us here. If you are a member of the public, you can email us here. Please keep in mind that we can't respond to individual questions (for example, status requests for URL suggestions) and that we can only consider questions for the post that are submitted via the above email links.
We'll be accepting your questions through next Friday, March 6. We look forward to hearing from you!
***The submission period is now closed and we are no longer accepting new questions. Thanks to everyone who participated! Responses will be shared in a future post.***

22. It does not mean that every site suggested by the public before that date has been reviewed.

23. It would be really helpful to know if a site is waiting to be reviewed or has been discarded.
I have updated my site with a relevant word in the title, but am worried about re-submitting as I have no idea whether I am in the queue or not.

24. There is a very influential DMOZ editor that controls a lot of the DMOZ directory. However, I am think he did something that was not right and against the DMOZ rules. I wanted to complain at the resource-zone, but it is run by "his friends". I wanted to officially complaint at DMOZ but my complaint was answered by HIM. I think there should be more control and transparency and clear rules. There is too many DMOZ editors that can do "bend" the rules to their liking.

26. I recently submitted my website under a main category that i did not see us listed under and that I felt we should be in. However, after doing this it dawned on me that we have a very well established site that does fairly well on google and became nervous that this could somehow erase all of the other traction that we have made online over the last 10 years. I simply wanted to make sure that we were properly categorized - now I'm fearful that I may have disrupted a good thing. I don't know much about this stuff - I'm hoping for a little reassurance that I haven't shot myself in the foot.

27. I have been submitting a few sites to dmoz. Some a year ago. They are validated good sites done by professionals. They seem to go into a dead end here. It appears that what is said here is not necessarily true. No reponse, no sites listed. I don't understand. I try to play the game and seem to be standing alone in the field. Does this site actually work? I hope so. Its important to me.

28. So our site. 1.2M users and growing was submitted several times and still is not listed. :-) What are you going to do. It's a volunteer organization.
I think the real issue is that so many search engines put too much weight on this site. It's too bad but I think this site is past it's shelf life.
And I have nothing but respect for folks who give of their time to do something like this. SO please don't take that as a knock it's just that at some point it's obvious that there aren't enough volunteers to get the job done, and since the job isn't getting done the relevancy of the data drops immensely. Unfortunately the search engines haven't caught up to the fact that things are going well.

29. I have been trying to add my company's website for some time now and every time I go through the whole process and then when I actually submit I get a 502 proxy error message. It says that the server proxy cannot process the request. Why is this happening and how can I actually submit my site?

30. The rules of being accepted in DMOZ are not transparent. And there is no apeal. We tried so many years but never success. This is compared to our competitors not quite honest. Sorry if my English is not good.

31. How does one know if their site has been rejected or is just waiting in the queue? I submitted a site several weeks ago and there is no sign of it being listed.

37. I first submitted my site back in 2005. Nothing ever happened. Quite strange, since I applied to a matching, small category, my site is popular, and a friend of mine with similar topics but much less content is listed. After a major redesign, I resubmitted the site in November, 2008. A DMOZ editor briefly looked at the home page (and only this) months later, but nothing else happened.
How shall I believe in the importance of DMOZ when my site is not listed but has a Google™ PageRank of 4, top ten and many #1 SERP matches with hundreds of related keywords, 2,000+ backlinks from Yahoo!, 11,000+ incoming links from hundreds of domains each month and is linked from some german Wikipedia pages? The content is pure information, the pages are accessible and valid code, and there's nothing wrong with the description I have submitted.
As you can see, I have been patient for years, and I do _not_ doubt that my site is worth to be listed. I understand quite well that a lack of editors must cause some delay. But I do _not_ understand how DMOZ wants to keep its corporate identity at an acceptable level without major changes.
Sorry I have to say that, and best regards -
Thomas
